The Everything About Ghosts Blog

American Hauntings

One of my favorite websites to visit is American Hauntings , a.k.a. Prairie Ghosts. Troy Taylor heads up the website, as well as a few ghost tours, ghost hunts and conferences in the Decatur, Illinois area. Mr. Taylor has also written quite a number of books on ghosts, most recently he penned Sex and the Supernatural.

Aside from all of the ghost tour and book info, you’ll also find a veritable plethora of information on ghosts and paranormal happenings throughout the United States. Topics such as Summerwind (a really creepy haunted house), the Lemp Mansion, Ghosts of Zombie Road and much more are all covered on this site. I invite you to stop on by and peruse it. Perhaps you’ll even sign up for their Ghost Conference coming up soon. If you enjoy the site and you have a MySpace account, friend Troy Taylor – then you’ll receive all kinds of ghostly updates!

Where are Your Favorite Haunting Grounds?

Since I can’t really do a formal poll to include every haunted place in the world, I thought I’d ask my readers to tell me about their favorite ghost tours that they have ever been on – and I’ll share the results, assuming some of you let me in on your faves.

My personal favorite has been the Savannah Ghost Tours (I’ve been on the walking ones and the Trolley ones).  My guides have always been pretty good, and they were willing to answer questions afterwards.  Some tours I’ve been on have hustled us on because they had scheduled another one directly after.

I’d also have to give a thumbs up to the Haunted Trolley Tour in Gettysburg as one of the more interesting tours I’ve been on.  I got some excellent photos on that particular tour.  I also had to stay on the trolley when my son fell asleep on my lap, so the driver told me quite a few stories of his own since he had grown up there.  I think those stories were creepier than any I had ever heard from the actual tour guides!

So please, tell me about your experiences and ones that I should definitely go on.  I’m gearing up for another summer of travel up and down the Eastern seaboard and the mid-Atlantic states.  I’m all ears!

Ghost Hunting Equipment

Most people do not realize how much of the ghost hunting equipment that is used is already at their fingertips. Much of what is needed can be found in your home. If you think you have a haunting you would like to investigate, whether it is your own home, that of a friend or relative, or a site you are simply curious about, look around and see all the equipment you have. Some things may require a trip to the electronics store, but even those items will likely not cost you much more than twenty dollars and they will definitely be worth adding to your collection of ghost hunting gear.

Psychic Kids – Gifted or Posessed?

I guess you could say that this is a follow-up to yesterday’s post. I was reading some other posts around the net about Halloween, Ghosts and random thoughts on psychics. I was thinking about what I had read regarding the children who can see ghosts, and how some fundamentalist Christians believe they are possessed by demons. Personally, I have to disagree, and yes, I’m also a Christian. I think many people “read between the lines” passages from the Bible and infer what they want. If enough people say the same thing, eventually it becomes a “truth,” even if it isn’t a direct quote from the Bible. And before everyone whips out their Bible, I would like to remind everyone that the Bible wasn’t originally written in English, nor had it been edited to suit certain rulers of our time (hint: King James)… and if we have to remember a quote from the Bible, how about, “judge not lest ye be judged.”

However, I don’t want this to be a lesson on the scripture.

Most children who are considered gifted psychically don’t use Ouija boards, tarot cards or worship the devil. They simply see things that are going on around us, they are more aware. If we currently only use 33 percent of our brain, what makes us so sure that if we used even 50 percent of our brain that many of us wouldn’t be able to see the same things? Why is it so hard to believe that our spirits could move onto a different plane of existence, as opposed to lying as ashes in a box in the ground, unable to escape until God calls us home? Isn’t it possible that our spirits could be freed from their earth bound bodies upon death?

I don’t believe that spirits of those that have gone before us do only one of the following: either they go to heaven/hell, never to see us again until we die, or they hover around us or a favorite place, unable to go anywhere else. I believe they do a combination of both- why would our free will end when we die? I don’t believe God rescinds this upon death.

I guess I’m concerned when certain people want to decide for the rest of us that their way is the best way, and they are free to interpret the Bible how they choose and foist those beliefs upon us. I don’t want to believe that they would be willing to cause harm to someone, especially children, because they can’t believe in alternate existence theories. I think we are all still children in this universe, and we will constantly evolve and understand more about the universe we live in. For centuries people have said that certain things can’t be possible, yet the impossible continues to happen.

As a Catholic, we believe in the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost – a little heavy on the ghost part in my case.

Rocky Mountain Paranormal Society

Hello fellow paranormal enthusiasts! Today’s Shout Out goes to the Rocky Mountain Paranormal Society. They have a neat page on their website, Ghosts in the News. Check it out for a neat list of ghosts that have made it posthumously into the news (talk about being desperate for those 15 minutes of fame!).

A little info about the Rocky Mountain Paranormal Society – this group is located in Westminster, Colorado. They take the scientific approach, which is helpful, and take nothing at face value. They prefer to debunk hauntings as opposed to supporting a haunting theory. If you need help with ghosts, and live in the Westminster area, these are the folks to contact.

Lily Dale NY and Meetup.com

Happy Fourth of July!

If any of you are out and about, you probably aren’t reading this blog today, but this listing can be used on other days as well.

First, if you are looking for a group of ghost hunters to hook up with, consider going to Meetup.com and type in “ghosts” in the search box and type in your zip code. This will pull up a bunch of ghost-related groups in your area. Perhaps you’ll find a group nearby with similar ghostly interests!

Next, I wanted to mention Lily Dale as a neat place to visit if you’re in New York. Check out the town’s website, Lily Dale Assembly, Inc. for more information on this spiritualist community. The summer is the best time to visit this community- they have workshops on the healing arts, Reiki, astral projection, angels, mediumship, astrology, sweatlodges and much more. You can also visit many of the mediums that reside in this town and enjoy the beautiful scenery here as well. It is located off of Interstate 90 at exit 59 near the town of Cassadega. Maps, driving instructions, workshop registration and accommodation information can all be found on the Lily Dale website.

Author- Mark Nesbitt – Ghosts of Gettysburg

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting author Mark Nesbitt.  I had traveled to Gettysburg, PA to take a trip on their new Ghost Train (Pioneer Lines Scenic Railway).  My trip on the train coincided with his book signing, also at the railway.

Mr. Nesbitt has written a series of books, Ghosts of Gettysburg.  I had purchased books from this series on previous trips to Gettysburg, but what an unexpected surprise to meet this author!  He was very congenial and signed my latest acquisition, Ghosts of Gettysburg VI:  Spirits, Apparitions and Haunted Places of the Battlefield.  We spoke briefly, and he told me that he was leaving all of his notes and stories to the Adams County Historical Society.  (Let’s hope nothing happens to him soon!).  This was one of the rare occasions that I’ve had a book signed and wasn’t shooed off immediately by a  “author handler.”   If you ever have the chance to meet this charming author, you won’t be disappointed!

By the way, I was on the first trip ever for their new Ghost Train.  If you have time when you visit Gettysburg, take a trip on this railway (ghost train, mystery train or whichever  other trip you choose).  It is very comfortable, the guides are fun and informative and you may learn a little about the local countryside, and of course, ghosts.

Who would have thought when they named the luxury liner the Queen Mary that she would have so many scary ghost stories to tell. Over the years there were many deaths, more than a few of which were unexplained, and many of these tragic figures haunt the ship, despite her being docked permanently, to this very day. There is a haunted church where one priest killed another in a fit of anger as they engaged in still another argument. Or the family who has had warnings of tragic things to come by ghosts who may have turned out to be ancestors.

American Ghost Society

After being on their “Bump in the Night” newsletter mailing list for quite some time, it only seemed appropriate to give this group a weekly shout out. Troy Taylor, site editor of the American Ghost Society, does a great job providing information on all things paranormal, as well as writing some very informative books on ghosts.

Of special interest are their ghost tours and events in Illinois. Don’t miss the Dead of Winter event on March 1 or their Devil in the White City tour on March 29.
